Concrete consists of cement, sand, gravel and water. As the water evaporates, the other ingredients cure into a hard slab. This curing process causes the concrete to shrink, which results in cracks. Concrete is a porous material that will absorb water and other liquids. When concrete absorbs any harmful material such a grease, oil, rust, or even the tannin from fallen leaves, it will leave a stain on the surface of the concrete. The longer the harmful liquids are exposed to the surface, the more intense the stain becomes.

Concrete is actually a porous material. Being a porous material it can absorb water and other liquids. Some of these liquids can have dissolved materials (salts, acids, etc.) which can severely harm the concrete. Water can enter concrete and freeze. Water which freezes expands by approximately nine percent. This expansion can literally tear concrete apart.
